MTV Africa Music Awards 2016

This year’s MTV Africa Musical Awards (MAMA2016) held at the Ticketpro Dome in Johannesburg, South Africa on Saturday, October 22, saw the likes of Nigeria’s music stars Yemi Alade, Wizkid and Tecko win awards in various categories.
Wizkid (Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun) bagged three awards in three different categories at the awards.

South Africa topped the list of the countries with most number of awards with six awards from different South African artists.

The MTV Africa Music Awards (also known as the MAMAs) were established in 2008 by MTV Networks Africa (now Viacom International Media Networks Africa) to celebrate the most popular contemporary music in Africa.

The MTV Africa Music Awards was conceived and created by the SVP and MD of the MTV Networks in Africa, Alex Okosi.
 
Earlier, African artists had been included in the MTV Europe Music Award where MTV Base Africa viewers voted for Best African artist in the 2006 and 2007 MTV Europe Music Awards.

The first awards show was held at the Velodrome, Abuja in Nigeria on 22 November 2008 and was broadcast around the world on November 29 in conjunction with Airtel and local television channels in Africa.

The show was hosted by Trevor Nelson.
The awards were preceded by four concerts celebrating the musicians nominated for the awards.

There were concerts featuring international and local nominees, which took place in Johannesburg, South Africa on November 5, Nairobi, Kenya on November 9, the Democratic Republic of the Congo on November 13 and Lagos, Nigeria on November 15, 2008.

The Award categories included Artist of the Year, Best Alternative, Best Female, Best Group, Best Hip-Hop, Best Live Performance, Best Male, Best New Act, Best R&B, Video of the Year and the MY Video Award which allows viewers to make their own version of a music video.

Rio 2016 :Nigerian tennis star Aruna Quadri was on Tuesday, August 9 knocked out of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games by world number one, Long Ma.

Quadri has been impressive in the games ,  beating fifth seeded player Chih-Yuan Chuang in the third round and German Boll Timo in the fourth to make it to the quarter-finals. In the quarter-finals, he met world number one Ma who effectively put him off with a 4-0 win. Quadri started calmly but Ma dominated the game to dispatch the Nigerian in straight sets 11-4, 11-2, 11-6, 11-7. Ma outclassed Quadri in the first game and also dominated the second which Quadri got just two points. In the last two games, the Nigerian returned stronger but that wasn’t enough as Ma’s experience saw him through. The whole game lasted just 28 minutes. Ma will now face Jun Mizutani of Japan in the semifinals on Thursday, August 11.

Drake's 'One Dance' Holds Lead for Song of the Summer

Since the 4th of  July fireworks and now into the more sweltering heat (and higher air-conditioning bills) of August, Drake's "One Dance," featuring WizKid and Kyla , continues to be the hottest song of the summer of 2016. Over the first 10 weeks of Billboard 's Songs of the Summer chart, the track has ranked at No. 1 each week. So, at about two-thirds of the way through summer, the collab, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 10 total weeks (and now ranks at No. 2) but was displaced by sia's' cheap thrills' ft. Sean Paul, continues to set the pace among summer's biggest hits so far. More shows to come thus summer from the Canadian's hit collab.
