Super Eagles escape World Cup disqualification! fined for fielding ineligible player against Algeria

Following the recent meeting of the Disciplinary Committee, FIFA can today confirm the latest sanctions imposed for incidents that occurred during the preliminary competition for the FIFA World Cup™ as well as in international friendlies.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has been sanctioned for fielding an ineligible player in the match between Algeria and Nigeria on 10 November 2017. The match is declared to be forfeited and awarded 3-0 in favour of Algeria, with the NFF also receiving a fine of CHF 6,000.

The sanction relates to the player Abdullahi Shehu failing to serve the automatic one-match suspension imposed on him as a result of receiving a caution in two separate matches of the same competition. This sanction bears no impact on the final result of the preliminary competition for the FIFA World Cup since Nigeria had already qualified (and Algeria eliminated) before the match took place.

However, the sanction has no significant impact on the three-time African champions’ - who had already sealed qualification prior to the match - participation at the quadrennial event.
Also, on the Group B qualification log, there is an insignificant change as Algeria still maintain their position at the base of the log, but now with four points, and Gernot Rohr’s men are unshaken at the summit, but with 13 points, five better than then-close contender Zambia.

Rio 2016 :Nigerian tennis star Aruna Quadri was on Tuesday, August 9 knocked out of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games by world number one, Long Ma.

Quadri has been impressive in the games ,  beating fifth seeded player Chih-Yuan Chuang in the third round and German Boll Timo in the fourth to make it to the quarter-finals. In the quarter-finals, he met world number one Ma who effectively put him off with a 4-0 win. Quadri started calmly but Ma dominated the game to dispatch the Nigerian in straight sets 11-4, 11-2, 11-6, 11-7. Ma outclassed Quadri in the first game and also dominated the second which Quadri got just two points. In the last two games, the Nigerian returned stronger but that wasn’t enough as Ma’s experience saw him through. The whole game lasted just 28 minutes. Ma will now face Jun Mizutani of Japan in the semifinals on Thursday, August 11.
